Everything old is new again…or is it?
Presented by Janine Bowes, Distance educator and thinker on ICT and learning, Tasmania
Thursday 8 November at 11:00am – 12:00noon AEDT
In this presentation Janine will explore the skills and attributes that an online teacher needs in the 21st century to stay on top of the game. In considering the past two decades of online learning, it is useful to note some underlying principles that are timeless but also to be open to new possibilities.
How do newbies get up to speed? How do old timers stay fresh? How do we stay up to date and develop ways to rapidly come to grips with and adopt new technologies in appropriate ways? How do we make sound decisions about which technologies to use for a given purpose?
Janine will unpack these issues using examples from recent practice including the use of synchronous environments, applying “teaching for understanding” in an online setting and a personally confronting experience in learning to use Second Life.

Chris Sutton’s presentation about her work with the Australian Lifesaving Academy Queensland was fantastic. They are delivering e-Learning to a huge number of people – and making a direct difference in terms of safe beaches… amazing stuff!
What was particularly interesting about Chris’presentation was how large an undertaking the training programs they are delivering are. And great to see that they are using open source tools too – both Moodle and Joomla are used extensively.
This is definitely a session worth checking out… look for the recording on the Conference website shortly!
Tips from Chris Sutton during the Between the Flags session
- Start at the top – Gain CEO and Management Commitment
- Keep your eye on the WIFM Factor
- Be business like in your approach
- Keep management in the loop and communicate
- Recognise their right to decide
- Ensure whatever you do supports the business plan
Other Tips
- Be a warm fuzzy, not a star
- Aquire funding where possible – it builds kudos
- Partner where it is to your advantage
- Get some good quick runs on the board
- Let management take the credit – even if it should be yours
- Plan, plan, plan – rollout at the organisation’s pace.
